Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write the nationality from the country, then the country from the nationality, inside I am ___. and I am from ___., with no word bank.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Section A: write the nationality for 5 countries (10 points), each with a flag and landmark: Thailand, Japan, China, France, Australia - I am ___. - Section B: write the country for 5 nationalities (10 points), with landmark pictures but no flags: Brazilian, Spanish, Italian, Indian, Korean - I am from ___. - India and Korea are new here; they are not on the matching sheet for this topic - The key writes every answer in full: Thai, Japanese, Chinese, French, Australian, Brazil, Spain, Italy, India, Korea

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet on this topic, after the matching and spelling sheets. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, ask what has to come off the end in Section B, e.g. Italian loses -ian and becomes Ital- plus y - In item 10, accept Korea as keyed and South Korea when a child is being specific; both name the same country in this context - After marking, have children write an ID card for an imaginary person, I am from Korea. I am Korean., and swap cards with a partner

Common sticking points

- In Section B, chopping the ending without fixing the stem, e.g. Ital instead of Italy or Spani instead of Spain - Writing country and nationality words in lower case, e.g. i am thai - Item 10's Korean palace with pink blossoms looks like the Japan picture in item 2, so a child relying on the picture may write Japan - Misspelling Australian in item 5 as Austrlian or Australain
