What children will practise

Read short sentences built on consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words and use the picture and the sentence meaning, not sound alone, to choose the word that fits.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Each item has a picture, one sentence and three word choices - Examples: The pig is in the ___. (pen / sun / lip), The cat will ___ on the mat. (dig / sit / run) and I eat ___ and ham. (fin / mud / jam) - Most answers are CVC words (pen, sit, cap, box, jam, sun), but see, swim and frog are not - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once children can blend CVC words sound by sound and are starting to read whole sentences. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, sound out all three choices in item 1 together (p-e-n) and ask which one matches the pig in its pen - In item 9, the sentence says the animal has a long neck but the picture and key say zebra. Leave this item out of the score and ask which animal really has a long neck - After marking, give each child one of the CVC distractors, such as mop, rug or van, to use in a new sentence

Common sticking points

- pen in item 1 means an animal pen, not a writing pen, which puzzles children who know only the second meaning - The heading says choose the CVC word, but item 2's answer is see while the distractors pet and cap are CVC words, so children following the instruction literally go wrong - In item 4, The dog has a ___, children who skip the picture of the dog in a cap may pick map or log - Item 6 shows a wooden crate, and some children will not recognise it as a box
