What children will practise

Pick the missing first letter of the verb in ten daily routine phrases from three options, using the opening sound and the picture.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Each item drops the first letter of the first word, e.g. _ake up, _rush teeth, _ave breakfast, _o to bed, and children circle one of three letters - Some distractors are lookalike letters, e.g. p, d and b in item 2, and some are sounds Thai learners confuse, e.g. l, r and d in item 9 - The phrases are the same ten as on the matching sheet, from wake up to play games - The key writes each phrase in full and shades the right letter yellow

How to use it in class

Use after the matching sheet as a halfway step before children write the phrases themselves; about 10 minutes. It suits Year 4 children who are still building reading confidence. - Have children read each full phrase aloud after circling, since the rest of the word is already printed - Follow up with a clipped-word game: say only ...ake a shower and children call out the full phrase

Common sticking points

- In item 2, brush teeth, children confuse b with d or p, both of which are distractors here - In item 9, read a book, Thai learners may choose l because they do not separate the r and l sounds - In item 1, _ake up, the distractors t and b make take and bake, both real words, so children who skip the picture may slip - In item 7, _ake a shower, the distractor m gives make a shower, which looks like a real phrase
