Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match day abbreviations such as MON and THU to the full day names in a word bank, then fill in the day that comes between two given days.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Word bank A-G: Thursday, Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, Monday, Saturday, Wednesday - Part A: write the letter under 7 calendar abbreviations (14 points): MON, THU, SAT, TUE, SUN, WED, FRI - Part B: fill the gap in 3 sequences (6 points): Monday - ? - Wednesday, Thursday - ? - Saturday, Saturday - ? - Monday - Key: Part A reads E A F C B G D; Part B is Tuesday, Friday, Sunday

How to use it in class

Use early in a days-of-the-week unit, once children can say the days but have not met the short forms. Allow about 10 minutes. - Point to the abbreviations on a real classroom calendar first, showing that each is the first three letters of the day - Build on Part B by asking What day is it today? What day is tomorrow? each morning that week

Common sticking points

- Mixing up THU and TUE, which both start with T and contain U - Mixing up SAT and SUN, which both start with S - Part B item 3 (Saturday - ? - Monday): children who think of the week as starting on Monday may not see that it wraps round to Sunday - Writing a letter A-G in Part B instead of the full day name
