Before you begin
Practise spelling the seven days by choosing the missing vowel, and pick the correct spelling from near-miss options.
10 items, 20 points - Part A: choose the missing vowel in 7 days (14 points), e.g. m_nday, wedn_sday, th_rsday, saturd_y, from three letters each - Part B: pick the correct spelling in 3 sets (6 points): mondey/monday/manday, wensday/wednsday/wednesday, saturday/saterday/saturdy - The key circles the correct option in both parts
Use mid-unit, once children can read the days but before they write them unaided. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Read the Part B options aloud together and point out that the wrong spellings sound almost right - Follow with the write-in-order sheet, which has no options
- Dropping the d or middle e in Wednesday (wensday, wednsday), as in the Part B distractors - Writing Monday as mondey or manday - Writing Saturday as saterday or saturdy - Choosing o instead of u in Thursday (thorsday) - Although the sheet prints the days in lowercase, children should begin each day name with a capital letter when writing
