Teaching guide

What children will practise

Plan with five questions (what the place is, where it is, what you see, what you do, why you like it), then write a 5-6 sentence paragraph about your own favourite place.

What's in the worksheet

One piece of writing, 20 points (no marking rubric printed) - Step 1: a five-box planner with starters place:, location:, I can see, I can and because - Word bank of ten items: beautiful, quiet, exciting, near my home, trees, playground, read, play, relax, makes me happy - Step 2: five ruled lines for a 5-6 sentence paragraph - The key is a model paragraph about a park, e.g. My favourite place is a park near my home. It is beautiful and quiet.

How to use it in class

Use after teaching adjectives for places and I can see.... Allow about 30-40 minutes. - Before writing, model Step 1 on the board with a place everyone knows, such as the school field, and ask children to choose a place of their own rather than the park in the example - Afterwards, children read their paragraph to a partner without naming the place, and the partner guesses

Common sticking points

- Copying the bank phrase straight into the because box, giving because makes me happy without the subject it - Reproducing the model park paragraph, since every planner picture shows a park - Carrying the planner fragments into Step 2, e.g. near my home. trees and a playground., instead of full sentences - Putting quiet and exciting side by side without making sense of the contrast
