Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Describe an imaginary magic treehouse in 5-6 sentences, gathering ideas through four sentence starters and choosing adjectives and nouns from a word bank.

What's in the worksheet

One piece of writing, 20 points (no marking rubric printed) - Step 1: four idea boxes with starters: It is in/near ___, It is ___ and ___, Inside, there is/are ___, It is special because ___ - Word bank of ten items: tall, wooden, secret, cosy, a rope ladder, a library, a telescope, a garden, read stories, watch stars - Step 2: six ruled lines for 5-6 sentences - The key is a six-sentence model, e.g. It is tall, wooden, and cosy. and Inside, there is a secret library.

How to use it in class

Use after the guided favourite-place sheet, since this one asks for imagination. Allow about 30-40 minutes. - Before writing, give children five minutes to sketch their own treehouse on scrap paper and write from their sketch rather than the sheet's pictures - Recap there is and there are with the bank nouns first, as box 3 leaves the choice to the child

Common sticking points

- In box 3 using there are with a single thing, e.g. there are a library, or there is with stars - Using bank items in the wrong slot, e.g. It is a rope ladder and a garden in the box that asks what it looks like - Copying all six model sentences, including the closing it feels like my own world, which is not in the bank - Dropping the article when reworking a phrase, e.g. There is telescope
