Teaching guide

What children will practise

Complete five past-tense sentences about a boy's day from pictures, then write your own five-sentence diary entry in a Dear Diary frame with a date and sign-off.

What's in the worksheet

20 points in two parts (no split printed) - Diary Moments: complete 5 picture sentences: In the morning, I ___ at 7 o'clock. / I ate ___ for breakfast. / I went to ___. / After school, I played ___. / In the evening, I ___ with my family. - My Guided Diary Entry: a frame with Date:, Dear Diary, the starters Today, I / In the morning, I / Then, I / After school, I / In the evening, I, and From, - Key for part one: woke up, toast, school, football, ate dinner - Part two's key is a model entry signed Ben, dated Monday, 1 September

How to use it in class

Use after teaching common past forms (woke, ate, went, played) and the diary layout. Allow about 25-30 minutes. - Before part two, have children tell a partner about their own yesterday using all five starters - Make clear that part two is about the child's own day, not a copy of the boy in the pictures

Common sticking points

- Writing wake up in the present for picture 1 instead of woke up - Writing eat dinner for picture 5; had dinner is also right, so accept ate or had - Adding a second full stop in part two, where each line already ends in a printed one - Copying part one's sentences wholesale into part two, so the diary is not the child's own day
