Teaching guide

What children will practise

Complete five sentences about last Saturday with the past forms went, saw, ate, was and felt, then write your own weekend diary using the sequencers First and Then.

What's in the worksheet

20 points in two parts (no split printed) - Complete 5 picture sentences: Last Saturday, I went to ___. / I saw ___. / I ate ___. / The weather was ___. / I felt ___ because ___. - The pictures show a park, a butterfly, a sandwich, the sun and three children running - The diary frame has Date:, Dear Diary, Last Saturday, I / First, I / Then, I / I felt and From, - Key for part one: the park, a butterfly, sandwiches, sunny, happy because I played with my friends; part two is a model entry signed Mia

How to use it in class

Use after the daily diary sheet, as this one gives less support and asks for a reason. Allow about 25-30 minutes. - Before writing, have children jot down three things they did last weekend, in Thai or English, then order them with First and Then - Afterwards, pairs interview each other, What did you do last Saturday? How did you feel?, and report back briefly

Common sticking points

- Item 3 shows one sandwich cut in half, so children may write a sandwich, which fits the picture better than the key's sandwiches; accept both - Writing park without the, or a park, in item 1 - Slipping into the present after First, I and Then, I, e.g. First, I eat... - Writing a single word after because in item 5, e.g. because friends
