What children will practise

Look at pictures of a child moving around town and write the letter of the matching direction phrase from a bank A-J, such as turn left, go past and go under the bridge.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points (one section) - Word bank A-J: go straight, turn left, turn right, stop, cross the street, go past, go over the bridge, go under the bridge, at the corner, go upstairs - Coloured arrows show the turns (items 2 and 7), and places give context: a BAKERY (item 1), a library on a street corner (item 9) and a 2nd FLOOR sign (item 10) - Over and under the bridge appear as a pair (items 4 and 8) - Key: F B D G A E C H I J

How to use it in class

Use at the start of a directions unit, before the letter-completion and writing sheets. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, play Simon says with turn left, turn right, go straight and stop so children move to the words - After marking, have children sketch a simple map from the classroom to the canteen and guide a partner with at least three phrases from the bank

Common sticking points

- Swapping turn left and turn right in items 2 and 7, since the child faces away; the arrow is the clue - Choosing go straight for item 1, where the child walks past a shop, instead of go past - Item 9 has no person, so children may pick go straight from the road rather than at the corner - In item 3 both the red and green lamps look lit, so children may hesitate over stop
