Before you begin
Circle the one missing letter in ten direction phrases, mostly vowels children often get wrong, such as r_ght, ov_r and upst_irs, with road arrows as picture clues.
10 items, 20 points (one section) - Eight items drop a vowel, e.g. g_ straight, st_p, at the c_rner, go upst_irs; two drop a consonant: turn _eft (n/r/l) and cro_s the street (r/s/t) - The vowel options are mostly a, e, i and o in varying order - Most pictures are empty roads with white or blue arrows; only item 5 shows people - The key circles the answers in red: o, l, i, o, s, o, e, i, o, a
Use after the matching sheet and before children write the phrases unaided. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children say each phrase slowly and listen for the missing vowel sound - After marking, play a grid-route game: call out phrases while children draw the route on squared paper, then compare with a partner
- In item 3, r_ght, Thai learners often pick a because they hear the ai sound - Item 2, turn _eft, offers r as a distractor, which tempts children who do not separate l and r - In item 10, upst_irs, children may pick e by analogy with there and where, which sound similar - In item 6, g_ past, children may pick a, echoing the a in past
