Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Learn that energy makes things move, work, and give light, sound and heat; sort light, sound and heat sources into natural and man-made; meet household electrical appliances and electrical safety; and learn about energy from the sun, wind and water and how to save energy.
20 slides (follow the page number in the bottom-right corner) in an energy factory with Fah, Mek and a robot helper - Pages 1-3: what energy is (moving, working, giving light, giving heat) and matching objects to the energy they use - Pages 4-10, light, sound and heat: light lets us see; natural light sources (sun, stars, fireflies) and man-made ones (bulb, torch, candle); sound comes from vibration and travels to our ears; sound from people, animals, instruments and machines; heat and heat safety; heat sources; and a ten-picture light, sound or heat sort - Pages 11-13, electricity: it makes a bulb, fan, radio and kettle work; six household appliances and their jobs; five safety rules (no wet hands on plugs, nothing poked into sockets, pull by the plug head) - Pages 14-18, energy sources and saving: sun, wind, water and biomass; solar panels; wind turbines and dams; energy through the day from 06.00 to 21.00; six ways to save energy - Pages 19-20: five A-B-C-D questions, matching pictures to energy types, and a certificate - There are no answer slides
Use in a Year 1-3 energy unit over three or four lessons of about 30 minutes (pages 1-5, 6-10, 11-13, 14-20). - On page 6 have children touch their throats while speaking, or pluck a rubber band, to feel the vibration before circling sound makers - Give page 13 the most time, with thumbs up or down for each safe or unsafe picture, then set the basic electricity worksheet and the everyday energy worksheet
- Thinking the Moon is a light source, though it reflects sunlight (the Moon is a distractor on page 4 and question 3 on page 19) - Thinking everything in the house runs on electricity, or that a bicycle does (page 11) - Thinking each thing gives only one kind of energy, e.g. a bulb gives only light, though it also gets hot, and the sun gives both light and heat - Pulling a plug out by the cable, or touching a plug with wet hands (page 13)
