What children will practise

Look at nature and recycling pictures and circle the missing first letter of ten environment words, such as recycle bin, river, earth and rubbish, from three options.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points (one part) - Words: recycle bin, tree, flower, river, sun, cloud, earth, plant, bicycle, rubbish - Each item drops the first letter, e.g. _ecycle bin, _arth, _ubbish - Distractors are lookalike or soundalike letters, e.g. b/r/l in item 4, b/d/p in item 9 and the vowels a/e/i in item 7 - The key circles the answers in red: r, t, f, r, s, c, e, p, b, r

How to use it in class

Use at the start of an environment unit to secure basic words before harder ones such as pollution or reduce. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, point to the REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE sign in the border art and ask what each word means - After marking, have children sort the ten words into natural things and things people make, then say a sentence such as We must keep the river clean.

Common sticking points

- In river (item 4) and rubbish (item 10) Thai learners may pick l, as they do not separate r and l; item 4 offers l as a distractor - Confusing b with d or p in bicycle (item 9), both of which are offered - Choosing a or i for earth (item 7), as the opening sound does not match the spelling - Choosing p for flower (item 3), since some Thai learners pronounce f and p alike
