Recognise 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 as one of several equal parts, and tell when a shape has not been split equally.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Questions 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6: shade the given fraction of a rectangle or circle, e.g. 1/3 of a circle - Question 4: circle the shape showing 1/2 from circles split into 2, 3 and 4 parts - Questions 7-8: decide whether a shape is split equally (both are not) - Questions 9-10: write the fraction for a shaded shape, 1/2 and 1/4 - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after children have folded paper into halves and quarters. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before questions 7-8, have children cut a strip into unequal pieces and lay them on top of each other to compare - Ask children to explain to a partner why the circle in question 8 is not quarters even though it has four parts

Common sticking points

- Answering equal in questions 7 and 8 by counting the parts (3 and 4) without comparing their size - Circling shape ค in question 4, the quarters, because its middle line looks like a half - Shading all parts but one instead of just one part - Writing 1/3 in question 10 by counting only the unshaded parts
