Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read the faces and body language in eight pictures and match them to feeling words A-H, then choose the first letter of happy, sad, angry and scared.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: happy, sad, angry, scared, tired, excited, surprised, sleepy - Part A: write the letter for 8 pictures (16 points), e.g. hands on cheeks with mouth open, arms crossed and frowning, yawning with zzz, wiping sweat with a towel - Part B: choose the first letter in 4 items (4 points) from h/s/t, a/p/s, a/b/t and c/s/b - Key: Part A reads G C H A E D F B; Part B reads h s a s

How to use it in class

Use at the start of a feelings unit, after a face-pulling guessing game. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, go through the pictures and ask what gives each feeling away: eyebrows, mouth or hands - After marking, ask How do you feel today? and have children point to a picture and answer I feel ...

Common sticking points

- Swapping sleepy (item 3, yawning with zzz) and tired (item 5, wiping sweat) - Swapping surprised (item 1) and scared (item 6), as both show an open mouth and hands at the face - Choosing c for scared in Part B because of the /k/ sound after the s - Choosing p or a for sad in Part B when the word does not come to mind
