Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the first letter of eight feeling words, including excited with its opening vowel e, then pick the correct spelling of happy, sad, angry and scared from versions with a letter missing or added.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 12 points - Part A: circle the first letter in 8 feeling words (8 points): _appy, _ad, _ngry, _cared, _ired, _xcited, _urprised, _leepy - Part B: choose the correct spelling in 4 sets (4 points): hapy / happy / happe, sad / sadd / sadn, angrey / angry / angri, scard / scared / scarred - Part A key reads h s a s t e s s

How to use it in class

Use after the picture-matching feelings sheet, once children start writing the words. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, write all eight words on the board and point out the double p in happy and the plain y ending of angry - After marking, have each child pick one word and write a short I am ... when ... sentence

Common sticking points

- Choosing c for _cared because of the /k/ sound after the s - Choosing a or i for _xcited, as the opening vowel is unclear - In Part B, choosing hapy with one p, or angrey with an added e - In Part B, choosing scarred, a real word meaning marked by a scar, or scard with the e missing
