What children will practise

Match festival symbols to a word bank A-J that mixes festival names (Songkran, Christmas, Easter) with related words (lantern, parade, present).

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - Word bank A-J: Songkran, Christmas, birthday, parade, Halloween, Easter, lantern, Valentine's Day, present, New Year - Pictures are symbols rather than scenes, e.g. a silver bowl splashing water (Songkran), painted eggs (Easter), a feathered mask (parade), a heart card (Valentine's Day) - Festival names are capitalised while birthday, parade, lantern and present are not - The key marks letters on the pictures: C B G J E H A F D I

How to use it in class

Use at the start of a festivals unit, before children write the names themselves. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children split the bank into festival names and objects or activities, and notice the capital letters - After marking, ask children to give the month of each festival in English, e.g. Songkran is in April.

Common sticking points

- Item 10, a wrapped gift, may draw Christmas or birthday instead of present, since gifts belong to both - For item 3, the red lantern, children may look for Chinese New Year or Loy Krathong, which are not in the bank, and pick New Year - Item 9, a feathered mask, may be taken as Halloween instead of parade - For item 4, fireworks, children may hesitate between New Year and parade
