Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write ten festival words unaided by labelling arrows on one busy scene, then draw a favourite festival and write one sentence about it.

What's in the worksheet

20 points in two parts - Part A: label 10 arrows, 1 point each (10 points): birthday, Christmas, lantern, New Year, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Songkran, Easter, parade, present - The same ten words as the matching sheet, but with no word bank, set in one scene with a Thai temple and a riverside city - Part B: draw and write (10 points), with My festival: and Sentence: lines - The key's Part B example is Songkran / I like Songkran.

How to use it in class

Use after the matching sheet on this topic. Allow about 20-25 minutes including drawing time. - For Part B, put a fuller model than the key's on the board, e.g. At Songkran, I splash water with my friends., so children aim beyond I like... - Afterwards, pin the drawings up for a gallery walk where children ask each other What do you do at...?

Common sticking points

- Misspelling Halloween as Haloween, and dropping the t in Christmas (Chrismas) - Writing festival names in lower case, e.g. songkran, easter - In item 9 the arrow points at the mask, so children may write mask instead of parade - Writing Valentine without 's Day in item 6, or leaving out the apostrophe
