Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at children cooking and circle the missing vowel in ten cooking verbs, such as mix, boil, chop, peel and pour, from five options.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points (one section) - Verbs: mix, boil, fry, chop, bake, stir, peel, slice, pour, grill - Each drops one vowel; the options are a, e, i, o and u in varying order, except item 3, fr_, which offers y instead of u - In the vowel-pair words (b_il, p_el, p_ur) only the first letter is missing - The key circles answers in green: i, o, y, o, a, i, e, i, o, i

How to use it in class

Use after introducing cooking verbs with mime or a short clip. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, mime stir, chop and pour and ask children to say the word and the vowel they hear - After marking, have children order some verbs into a simple recipe, e.g. First, chop the tomatoes. Then, mix...

Common sticking points

- In item 3, fr_, children often pick i because they hear the ai sound, though the answer is y - In item 6, st_r, children often pick e or u because the vowel sound is unclear - In item 7, p_el, children may pick i because they hear an ee sound - In item 2, b_il, children may pick a by analogy with ai in other words
