Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match three fruits and seven vegetables to a word bank A-J and write the letter in the box, telling apart green vegetables that look alike, such as cabbage, broccoli and cucumber.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Word bank A-J: mango, cabbage, carrot, onion, banana, broccoli, pumpkin, grapes, cucumber, corn - Three fruits (grapes, banana, mango) and seven vegetables - Three green pictures (broccoli, cucumber, cabbage) and three orange ones (carrot, pumpkin, onion) - Key: C H F A J I E G D B

How to use it in class

Use at the start of a fruit and vegetables unit, before the missing-letters sheet. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, read the word bank aloud together; children raise a hand for a fruit and touch their head for a vegetable - After marking, ask round the class Do you like broccoli? and have children answer Yes, I do. or No, I don't.

Common sticking points

- Swapping cabbage (item 10) and broccoli (item 3), both green - Item 9's orange-brown onion may be taken for pumpkin, as it is coloured like item 8 - Some children hesitate over item 2 because the bank says grapes, not grape - Writing the letter I like the number 1 or a lower-case l, which makes item 6 hard to mark
