Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write ten fruit and vegetable words unaided from pictures, including longer words such as avocado, strawberry and eggplant, and the plurals cherries and grapes.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Answers: avocado, cherries, eggplant, orange, strawberry, grapes, broccoli, mango, corn, cucumber - No word bank; one line per picture - Five words repeat from the matching sheet (grapes, broccoli, mango, corn, cucumber); avocado, cherries, eggplant, orange and strawberry are new - The key writes each answer in green on the line

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet in this topic, after matching and missing letters. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, revise the five new words with picture cards, since they have not appeared on earlier sheets - For item 3, accept eggplant or aubergine, and accept cherry or cherries when a child explains whether they see one fruit or several - After marking, have children draw their own fruit plate with three items and label them

Common sticking points

- Writing cherry or cherrys in item 2, where the picture shows two - Misspelling broccoli as brocoli or broccolli - Children taught British English may write aubergine for item 3, which is also correct - Dropping one r from strawberry (strawbery)
