Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read a greeting or goodbye on each role card and choose the reply that fits the time of day and the situation from ten response cards.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Response cards A-J: See you tomorrow!, Good morning!, Hello!, Good night!, Goodbye!, Hi!, Good afternoon!, Good evening!, See you!, Bye!, each used once - Role cards include Good morning, teacher!, It is time to sleep., I must go now. and I will see you tomorrow. - Five greetings (items 1, 2, 6, 8, 9) and five goodbyes (items 3, 4, 5, 7, 10) - An unscored Let's reflect face to colour; the separate key writes each letter with a tick

How to use it in class

Use mid-unit, once children know the time-of-day greetings. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before matching, have children sort cards A-J into two piles, meeting and leaving, so they only search the right pile - After marking, cut out the role and response cards for paired role play: one reads a card, the other answers and waves

Common sticking points

- Swapping Hi! and Hello! in items 2 and 9; both are fine, but the key pairs Hello, May! with Hi! and Hi, Tom! with Hello! - Goodbye!, Bye! and See you! are interchangeable in items 3, 5 and 7, so an answer that differs from the key may not really be wrong - Choosing Good evening! for It is time to sleep. (item 4) instead of Good night! - Choosing See you! for item 10 and missing the word tomorrow
