What children will practise

Look at children showing an illness or injury and write the letter of the symptom from a bank A-J, telling the -ache words apart by where the hand is: headache, earache, toothache, stomachache.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points (one section) - Word bank A-J: sore throat, fever, small cut, toothache, runny nose, headache, stomachache, cough, earache, sprained ankle - Four -ache words, told apart by where the child holds: tummy, ear, cheek and forehead (items 1, 2, 6 and 9) - Other pictures carry a prop: a thermometer and cold cloth (fever), a plaster on a finger (small cut), a bandaged ankle, a tissue (runny nose) - The key writes the letters in green with ticks: G I B C A D J E F H

How to use it in class

Use at the start of a health unit, before the What's the matter? dialogue. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children point to the body part you name, head, ear, tooth, stomach, throat, then add -ache - After marking, role-play doctor and patient: one child mimes a picture, the other asks What's the matter? and the first answers I have a headache.

Common sticking points

- Swapping toothache (item 6) and earache (item 2), as the hand is at the side of the face in both - Swapping sore throat (item 5) and cough (item 10), both about the throat - Item 8 shows a sneeze into a tissue, so children may choose cough instead of runny nose - Item 9 shows a hand on the forehead, so children may choose fever, linking the forehead with temperature
