What children will practise

Look at pictures of children who feel unwell and circle the missing vowel to complete ten illness words such as headache, toothache and sore throat.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Section A: complete each word by circling one missing vowel from a, e, i, o and u, shuffled in every item - The words are h_adache, f_ver, c_ugh, t_othache, s_re throat, e_rache, r_nny nose, st_machache, sm_ll cut and spr_ined ankle - o is the answer four times (cough, toothache, sore throat, stomachache) - A separate key circles each answer in green with a tick

How to use it in class

Use after teaching illness words and I have a .... Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, children mime a picture (holding their head, their tummy, coughing) and a partner names the problem in English - After marking, pairs role-play doctor and patient with What's the matter? / I have a sore throat., using words from the sheet

Common sticking points

- headache: circling a, because the word sounds like hedache and the ea pattern is unexpected - cough: choosing a or u, as the ough spelling does not match the sound - stomachache: circling a, since the first vowel is said like a weak a sound - earache: circling e again after the first e, not knowing the word starts ea
