Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write ten illness words in full from pictures with no word bank, from headache through to two-word phrases such as runny nose and sprained ankle.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Section A: look at each picture and write the word on the line, with no word bank or letter clues - Key answers: headache, fever, cough, toothache, sore throat, earache, runny nose, stomachache, small cut and sprained ankle - Four answers are two-word phrases (sore throat, runny nose, small cut, sprained ankle) and four end in -ache - A separate key writes each answer on the line

How to use it in class

Use at the end of a health unit, after the vowel-gap sheet on the same topic. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, write -ache on the board and ask which body words on the sheet can take it (head, tooth, ear, stomach) - After marking, children pick three pictures and write simple advice such as You should drink water. or You should rest., using the tips along the bottom of the sheet as prompts

Common sticking points

- Swapping item 4 toothache and item 6 earache, as both pictures show a hand held to the side of the face - Dropping the first h in stomachache (stomacache) or splitting it as stomach ache - Writing only cut for item 9 and ankle or broken leg for item 10, which the teacher must decide how to mark - Spelling headache as hedache, the way it sounds
