Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match eight pictures of rooms and parts of a home to words such as kitchen, garage and balcony, and choose the first letter of house, roof and window.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: write a letter A-H beside 8 pictures (16 points) from the bank bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living room, dining room, garage, garden and balcony - Part B: circle the first letter from three options in 4 items (4 points): a house (h/m/p), a lawn (g/y/r), a roof (t/m/r) and a window (w/d/n) - Key: Part A reads B G A F E C H D; Part B reads h y r w

How to use it in class

Use early in a my-home unit, after introducing the rooms with a cut-away house picture. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, ask Where do you sleep? / Where do you cook? and have children answer with a room name - In Part B item 2, accept g for garden from the picture, not y from the printed key - After marking, children draw a simple plan of their own home and label the rooms in English

Common sticking points

- Part B item 2: circling g, because the picture is the same garden as in Part A, while the key wants y (yard) - Swapping dining room (item 5) and living room (item 8), as both end in room - Item 7 balcony is new to many children and gets left to the end and guessed - Part B item 3 roof: circling t, thinking of top
