Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the first consonant of eight room words such as _itchen and _alcony, then pick the correct spelling from near-miss versions.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 12 points - Part A: circle the first letter from three options in 8 items (8 points): _edroom, _itchen, _athroom, _iving room, _ining room, _arage, _arden and _alcony - Part B: circle the correct spelling in 4 items (4 points), with distractors such as bedrom, kichen, kittchen, gaden, gardan, balcany and balconey - Key: Part A reads b k b l d g g b; Part B is bedroom, kitchen, garden and balcony

How to use it in class

Use once children know the room names from the matching sheet. Allow about 10 minutes. - In Part A, have children say each room name aloud before circling, as the first sound gives nearly every answer - After marking Part B, ask children to point out what is wrong with each distractor, e.g. kichen is missing t, gaden is missing r

Common sticking points

- Part B item 2: picking kichen because the t in tch is barely heard, or kittchen with a doubled t - Part B item 3: picking gaden, since Thai speakers often drop the r in garden - Part B item 4: picking balcany or balconey because the middle vowel is unclear - Part A: mixing up b and d in items 1, 3 and 5, letters young children often reverse
