What children will practise

Match eight pictures of people at work to job words such as chef, pilot, firefighter and police officer, using uniforms and workplaces as clues, then choose the first letter of doctor, pilot, chef and nurse.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: write a letter A-H beside 8 pictures (16 points) from the word bank pilot, farmer, nurse, teacher, firefighter, chef, doctor and police officer - Each picture carries a strong setting clue: a kitchen, a farm with a tractor, an airport, a fire engine, a police car - Part B: choose the first letter from three options in 4 items (4 points), reusing the doctor, pilot, chef and nurse pictures - Part A key reads F G B D A C E H

How to use it in class

Use at the start of a jobs unit, after introducing the words with picture cards. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, ask where each person works, e.g. A chef works in a kitchen., using the backgrounds - After marking, play a mime game: one child acts a job and others ask Are you a pilot? - Mark Part B yourself rather than from the printed key: the correct letters are d for doctor, p for pilot, c for chef and n for nurse

Common sticking points

- Swapping doctor (item 2) and nurse (item 6), as both are in a hospital - Swapping pilot (item 5) and police officer (item 8), since both wear a peaked cap and a dark blue uniform - Part B item 3 chef: picking s, because the ch in chef sounds like sh - Getting police officer right but not noticing it is two words
