Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the first consonant of eight job words such as _hef, _irefighter and _olice officer, then pick chef, doctor, pilot and nurse from look-alike misspellings.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 12 points - Part A: circle the first letter from three options in 8 items (8 points): _hef, _octor, _armer, _eacher, _ilot, _urse, _irefighter and _olice officer - Part B: circle the correct spelling in 4 items (4 points); distractors are cheff, chep, docter, docctor, pilat, pillot, ners and nirse - Key: Part A reads c d f t p n f p; Part B is chef, doctor, pilot and nurse - A separate key highlights each answer in yellow

How to use it in class

Use after the picture-word matching sheet on jobs, to focus on spelling. Allow about 10 minutes. - In Part A, have children say each job aloud and listen for the first sound before circling - After marking Part B, children copy the four correct words and underline the part the distractors changed, e.g. -or in doctor, -ur- in nurse

Common sticking points

- Part A item 1 _hef: circling s, because the ch in chef is pronounced sh - Part B item 2: picking docter, since the ending sounds like the -er in teacher and farmer - Part B item 4: picking ners or nirse, as -ur-, -er- and -ir- sound the same - Part B item 1: picking cheff by analogy with words like off
