Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Compare length, height, weight and capacity, measure length with blocks and with a centimetre ruler, read a balance scale and put objects in order from least to most.
20 slides (follow the page number in the bottom-right corner) - Pages 2-10, length: pencil and rubber, ruler and pen, longer or shorter; which tree and which tower is taller; order four ribbons; how many blocks long; reading a 0-10 cm ruler; measuring a pencil, rubber, scissors and spoon; the longest of 12, 9, 15 and 7 cm; choosing the 12 cm bridge - Pages 11-14, weight: watermelon and apple, book and pencil; reading a balance (pumpkin and orange, teddy and football); ordering feather, football, book and watermelon; a market with oranges 1 kg, pumpkin 2 kg, watermelon 3 kg - Pages 15-17, capacity: what capacity means, ordering a glass, bottle, jug and bucket, comparing water levels in pairs marked ก. and ข. - Page 10 is a four-step length review (including choosing the right unit); pages 18-20 are four true or false items (such as a watermelon is lighter than a feather), a four-part final round and a summary - There are no answer slides
Use for a Year 1-2 measurement unit over three lessons of about 25-30 minutes (length, weight, capacity), keeping pages 18-20 for an end-of-unit review. - Before pages 6-7 give each child a real ruler, have them line their own pencil up with 0 and read along with you, then set the measuring length with a ruler worksheet - In the capacity lesson pour water from a glass into a bottle at the front before answering page 16, then use the capacity and volume worksheet
- Reading the ruler from its edge instead of lining the object up with 0 (page 6 stresses starting at 0) - Leaving gaps between blocks or overlapping them when measuring (page 5 says to place them end to end) - Assuming the bigger object is always heavier (page 12 warns that something can look light and still be heavier) - Reading the balance backwards, thinking the raised pan holds the heavier object
