Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Read a short story, Delivering a Cake to Grandma, scene by scene, and practise comprehension: naming characters, answering questions from the text, ordering events and places, matching cause and effect, naming feelings, choosing the best summary and retelling or continuing the story in their own words.
20 slides, each with a short passage and one activity - Slides 1-10, the story scene by scene: Khao Hom and her dog Mali set off, cross a flower garden and a small wooden bridge, shelter from rain in a sala and reach Grandma's house; activities include matching characters to sentences, circling pictures that fit the text (cake box, football, umbrella), filling in butterflies and flowers, matching rain to holding the cake tight, where they sheltered, whether she feels worried, happy or sleepy, who-did-what-where, and retelling from three pictures - Slides 11-17, whole-story review: order five places, match speech bubbles to characters, circle the six things in the story, three cause-and-effect pairs, four before-or-after pairs, pick the best summary from three, and retell from a four-panel strip - Slides 18-20: my favourite part and why, write what happens next, and the lessons (kindness, perseverance, taking care on the way) - There are no answer slides
Use in Year 1-2 Thai lessons on reading for meaning and retelling, over two lessons of about 40 minutes (slides 1-10 reading the story, slides 11-20 review and writing). - In the first lesson read each passage aloud and have children echo-read sentence by sentence, then do each slide's activity as a class - In the second, pairs work through slides 11-16, then each child retells the four-panel strip on slide 17 aloud to a partner before writing the next part on slide 19
- Circling things that appear in the pictures but not in the text, such as the bag or umbrella, which is worth discussing: do we answer from the words or the pictures? - Choosing a summary that covers one detail, or one that never happened (slide 16 offers getting lost and losing the cake, and Mali going to the zoo) - Reversing cause and effect, e.g. it rained because she ran for shelter - Retelling picture by picture without linking words such as แล้ว, ต่อมา, ในที่สุด
