Before you begin
Give the position of objects on a 5 x 5 treasure-map grid as a grid code, reading the column letter (A-E) before the row number (1-5).
10 questions, 20 points - A treasure-island map with 10 pictures on a 5 x 5 grid - An unscored example: the ship is at A1 - Write the grid code for the compass, parrot, rowing boat, palm tree, fish, star, shell, treasure chest, map and big ship, e.g. parrot D2, treasure chest C5 - A separate answer key is included
Use in a position and direction unit once children know the letters A-E. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Do the first one together: one finger on the letter at the top, one on the number at the side, then slide them until they meet - Follow up with a pairs game: one child calls a grid code, the other names what is in that square
- Writing the number before the letter, e.g. 2D instead of D2 - Slipping one row, especially for pictures in rows 4 and 5, far from the header - Treating the decorative pictures around the border, such as the sailing ship or treasure chest on the right, as if they were on the grid
