Teaching guide

What children will practise

Listen for the first sound and circle the opening consonant of eight nature words such as _loud, _ainbow and _ree, then pick the right spelling from near-misses like sun / san / son.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: circle the first letter from three options in 8 items (16 points): _un, _oon, _tar, _loud, _ain, _ainbow, _ree and _lower - Part A key reads s m s c r r t f - Part B: circle the correct spelling in 4 items (4 points): san/sun/son, mooon/moon/mon, star/starr/stor and ran/rain/rein - Part B distractors change a vowel or double a letter; a separate key circles answers in red

How to use it in class

Use after the nature matching sheet, once children know the meanings and are ready to focus on first sounds. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, play a sound game: say /k/ /k/ cloud and children hold up the letter c - After marking Part B, read the distractors aloud next to the answers, e.g. ran and rain, so children hear how the vowel changes

Common sticking points

- Item 4 _loud: choosing f or b, not knowing the /k/ sound is spelt c here - Part B item 4: picking ran, which sounds close to rain for Thai learners - Part B item 1: picking san or son because the short u in sun sounds like a - Item 7 _ree: choosing f or p because the t in the tr blend is not heard clearly
