Before you begin
Learn what natural resources around us (soil, water, air, forests, animals, sunlight) give us, meet natural disasters and how to stay safe, and choose behaviours that conserve nature, such as saving water, not burning rubbish, sorting waste, planting trees and protecting wildlife.
20 slides with the Nature Rescue Team, Fah, Mek and Dindee the robot - Slides 1-7, nature and resources: nature around us (land, water, air, living things), what soil is (circle what grows in soil), water is life (which things need water), the air around us (try a pinwheel), six natural resources (match paper, fish, vegetables, drinking water, furniture and clothes to resources) and using resources wisely - Slides 8-10, natural disasters: floods, drought, forest fires and storms and what to do when one strikes, rescue missions for a flooded village, a drought area and a forest edge, and a four-question review - Slides 11-18, conservation: what conservation is (circle the good behaviours among eight), restoring soil, keeping water clean, caring for the air, reduce, sort and recycle, planting forests, helping wildlife and their homes, and matching four areas' problems to solutions - Slides 19-20: a four-question review and a certificate - There are no answer slides
Use in a Year 2-3 natural resources and environment unit over three or four lessons of about 30 minutes (slides 1-7, 8-10, 11-15, 16-20). - Most slides have a good-or-bad behaviour task, so have children hold up circle or cross cards together and ask for reasons on items that can be argued, such as whether a car needs water - After slide 8 rehearse what the class would do in a flood or storm at school, and after the unit set the natural resources worksheet and the environment around us worksheet
- Thinking natural resources are unlimited (slide 6 says they are limited) - Choosing behaviour that looks helpful but is not, such as burning leaves instead of composting, which harms soil and air (slides 12 and 14) - Not knowing which resource an item comes from, e.g. that paper and wooden tables come from forests (slide 6) - Thinking all natural disasters are caused by people, or that children cannot do anything to help
