Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write the full number word for eight numbers, add the matching word-bank letter, then supply the first letter of thirteen, sixteen, eight and one.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Word bank A-H: seventeen, one, twenty, thirteen, eight, nineteen, four and sixteen - Part A: for 13, 1, 19, 4, 16, 8, 20 and 17, write the word and the word-bank letter (8 items, 16 points) - Part B: add the first letter to _hirteen, _ixteen, _ight and _ne (4 points) - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once children can match 1-20 to their words and are beginning to write them. Allow about 15 minutes. - Have children fill in the letter box first and then copy the word, so the choice is checked before the spelling - After marking, call out numbers that are not on the sheet, such as 12 or 15, for children to write on mini whiteboards

Common sticking points

- Part A has four -teen numbers (13, 16, 17, 19), so children may pick the wrong -teen word, e.g. seventeen for 16 - 20 is twenty, but some children follow the 13-19 pattern and write twoteen - In Part B, _ne may get a w because one begins with a w sound - _ight may get an a because eight begins with that vowel sound
