Before you begin
Match the tens from 20 to 90 to their English words and tell -ty numbers apart from -teen numbers and single digits.
12 questions, 20 points - Word bank A-H: seventy, twenty, ninety, forty, sixty, thirty, eighty and fifty - Part A: match 40, 90, 20, 70, 50, 30, 80 and 60 to their words (8 items, 16 points) - Part B: read a word and circle the right number (4 items, 4 points), e.g. seventy from 70, 17 or 7 and fifty from 15, 50 or 5 - A separate answer key is included
Use once children count confidently to 20 and are starting to count in tens. Allow about 10 minutes. - Warm up by counting in tens with claps, then say thirteen or thirty at random and have children hold up the number they hear - Part B also works as a listening task: read the word aloud and let children circle before they see it
- Part B's distractors are -teen numbers and single digits, so children may circle 17 for seventy, 14 for forty, 19 for ninety or 15 for fifty - forty is often misspelt fourty by analogy with four - fifty and fifteen, forty and fourteen sound very close; children need to listen for the stressed ending
