Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write the tens from 20 to 90 as whole words, choosing from a word bank, then pick the first letter of sixty, twenty, ninety and forty.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Word bank A-H: seventy, twenty, ninety, forty, sixty, thirty, eighty and fifty - Part A: write the word for 60, 20, 90, 40, 70, 30, 80 and 50 (8 items, 16 points) - Part B: circle the missing first letter in 4 words (4 points): _ixty (F/S/T), _wenty (T/P/R), _inety (M/L/N) and _orty (V/F/W) - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use as the step after a tens-matching sheet, when children can read the words but have not yet written them. Allow about 15 minutes. - Have children cross out each word in the bank as they use it, so they can check all eight are used once - On a second attempt, fold the word bank away and do Part A from memory to see who can really spell them

Common sticking points

- The word bank is not in number order, so a child copying A, B, C down the page gets most items wrong - Mixing up sixty and seventy, which both start with s - In Part B the _orty item offers V and W, and children who hear f and v as similar may circle V - Dropping the e in ninety (ninty) when writing from memory
