Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the verb that describes what each job does, from three options, to complete present simple sentences with -s, such as A dentist ___ teeth. and A firefighter ___ fires.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Section A, Choose the correct verb) - Every sentence is A/An + job + ___ + object, e.g. A chef ___ food. and A police officer ___ people safe. - Answers: teaches, flies, cooks, helps, grows, cleans, does, keeps, paints and fights - Distractors are verbs from other jobs on the same sheet, e.g. drives, farms, writes, sleeps - A separate answer key rings each answer with a tick

How to use it in class

Use once the ten job words are known, for example after the picture-matching sheet. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, put verb-noun pairs on the board, such as grow vegetables, fight fires and do experiments, since do experiments does not follow the Thai - After marking, children write a sentence in the same pattern about a family member's job, e.g. My mum ___., and read it to a partner

Common sticking points

- In item 7 children may hesitate between does and cooks, since the scientist mixing liquids in test tubes looks a bit like cooking - In item 6 grows sits next to teeth, and a child thinking of teeth growing may choose it over cleans - In item 4 helps is a general verb, so children may look for a vet-specific verb that is not there - When writing their own sentences, children often drop the -s: A farmer grow vegetables.
