Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match ten pictures of people at work to job words A-J in the word bank, using the uniform, tools and setting as clues, such as a chef's hat, a stethoscope or a microscope.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Section A, Picture & Word Match) - Children write a letter in the box beside each picture - Word bank of ten: firefighter, veterinarian, farmer, teacher, dentist, artist, pilot, scientist, chef and police officer - Some pictures need a closer look: item 5 is a doctor with a dog (veterinarian), item 10 a dentist, item 6 a laboratory (scientist) - A separate answer key labels each picture with its word and letter

How to use it in class

Use as the opening sheet of the P4-6 jobs unit. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, read the word bank aloud together, especially the long and tricky veterinarian and scientist - After marking, play a miming game in which a partner guesses with a sentence, You are a pilot., then move on to the circle-the-verb sheet

Common sticking points

- Item 3 (pilot) and item 8 (police officer) both wear a dark navy uniform and peaked cap, so children may swap them; the plane and the police car behind are the clue - Item 5 wears a white coat and stethoscope like a doctor, so children may look for doctor, but the dog makes it veterinarian - Items 5 and 6 both wear white coats, so scientist and veterinarian can be swapped - The word bank has exactly ten words for ten pictures, so one wrong letter always causes a second
