Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at each picture and write the job word from memory with no word bank, including the long veterinarian and the two-word police officer.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Section A, Write the job words) - Ten jobs in this order: firefighter, teacher, pilot, chef, veterinarian, dentist, scientist, police officer, artist, farmer - No word bank and no letter clues; children spell each word in full - The same ten jobs as the matching sheet, with new pictures and a partly different order - A separate answer key writes each word on the line

How to use it in class

Use at the end of the jobs unit, after the matching and verb sheets. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, spell the hard words aloud in syllables, e.g. vet-er-in-ar-i-an and sci-en-tist - Agree beforehand whether vet, police or cook earn the marks, then use the sheet as the end-of-unit spelling check

Common sticking points

- Dropping a syllable from veterinarian: veterinarin or vetrinarian - Leaving the c out of scientist: sientist - Writing police officer as one word, or just police - Writing cook for chef in item 4, or fireman for firefighter in item 1
