Teaching guide

What children will practise

Answer five questions about likes in a word or two, then turn those answers into opinion sentences with a reason, using I think, My favourite, I like, I do not like and because.

What's in the worksheet

20 points in total (the sheet gives no per-item marks) - Part one: five picture boxes, What is your favorite animal / food / place / game? and What makes you happy?, with space to write a short answer - Write Your Opinions: five sentence frames, e.g. I think ___ is great because ___. and I feel happy when ___. - Answers are the child's own opinions, so there is no single right answer - A separate model answer page uses dogs, pasta, the beach and My favorite food is pasta because it is delicious.

How to use it in class

Use in a writing lesson once giving reasons with because has been taught. Allow about 20-25 minutes. - Decide a marking scheme before using it, for example 4 points per sentence (2 for meaning, 2 for the reason), as the sheet only states 20 points in total - Have children fill the topic boxes first, then interview a partner with the same questions and a follow-up Why?, so their reasons go beyond it is good

Common sticking points

- In sentence 1 children write a whole clause in the gap and repeat the ending, as in I think dogs are great is great; the model answer does this too - In sentence 4, I do not like ___, children may copy their favourite game from topic box 4 although the frame asks for a dislike - Writing an incomplete reason after because, e.g. because delicious without it is - In sentence 5 leaving out the subject after when: I feel happy when play with my family
