Teaching guide

What children will practise

Answer five Wh- questions about a beach trip in full past-tense sentences, using clues such as beach / Saturday and flew a kite / ate lunch, as the building blocks of a recount paragraph.

What's in the worksheet

5 questions, 20 points (no per-item marks on the sheet) - A wide picture of a family picnic on the beach, and five questions: Where did you go?, Who went with you?, What did you see?, What did you do? and How did you feel? - Clues: beach / Saturday, my family, blue sea / shells, flew a kite / ate lunch, happy / fun - The past forms needed, went, saw, flew, ate and felt, are all irregular - A separate model answer page gives e.g. I went to the beach on Saturday. and I felt happy. It was fun!

How to use it in class

Use after teaching the irregular past forms of go, see, fly, eat and feel. Allow about 20 minutes. - The sheet only has an answer space per question, so have children copy their five sentences into their books as one paragraph, add a title and join them with First, Then and In the end - Do this sheet before the scaffolded one, as every question here comes with a clue

Common sticking points

- Using the present form from the question, as in I go to the beach., or adding -ed: goed, seed, flyed - In question 1 leaving out the preposition: I went to the beach Saturday. instead of on Saturday - In question 2 answering just My family. rather than a full sentence, though the task builds a paragraph - In question 4 the clue already gives flew a kite, but children may change it back to fly a kite in their own sentence
