Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Plan from four question boxes (name, looks, abilities, why you like it), then write a 5-6 sentence paragraph about your own dream pet with help from a word bank.

What's in the worksheet

One piece of writing, 20 points (no marking criteria on the sheet) - Four planning boxes: What is its name? (name: ___), What does it look like? (colour / size), What can it do? (special skill) and Why do you like it? (because ...) - Word bank of eight: fluffy, friendly, clever, small, colourful, can sing, can run fast, makes me happy - A six-line box for the paragraph - A separate model answer about a parrot called Coco, e.g. It is colourful and very clever. and I like Coco because it makes me happy.

How to use it in class

Use after the guided sheet, once children can write single sentences. Allow about 25-30 minutes. - Have children note a word or two under each of the four boxes, turn each box into one sentence, then add a closing line like the model's I want to play with Coco every day. - Set your own marking criteria first, e.g. five sentences, a reason with because, word-bank words spelt correctly, and let partners check each other's work before handing in

Common sticking points

- Writing only four sentences, one per planning box, with no opening or closing line, so falling short of 5-6 - Using a word-bank item as a sentence on its own, such as Fluffy. or Can sing., with no It - Starting every sentence with It is, and never using It can or because - Starting each sentence on a new line, as the model does, instead of writing a continuous paragraph
