What children will practise

Choose the sentence with the irregular past form that agrees with a past time phrase (yesterday, last Sunday, last night), rather than the one with the present form.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - Each item has a picture and sentences a/b that differ only in the verb, e.g. He eats lunch yesterday. / He ate lunch yesterday. - Ten verb pairs: eat-ate, go-went, see-saw, drink-drank, make-made, run-ran, have-had, write-wrote, sleep-slept, swim-swam - Every distractor is the present form (with or without -s) next to a past time phrase - A separate answer key writes the correct sentence under each picture, without the letter

How to use it in class

Use as the first irregular past sheet, once the ten verb pairs on it have been drilled. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, children circle the time phrase in each item (yesterday, last Sunday, last night) to see that every sentence is in the past - Follow with the fill-in sheet on the same topic, and have children say two sentences about what they did yesterday using verbs from this page

Common sticking points

- Choosing the present sentence because the picture shows the action happening, e.g. the boy drinking milk in item 4 - In items 7 (have-had) and 9 (sleep-slept) children may not recognise had and slept as past forms - In item 10 swam and swim differ by one vowel, so quick readers may slip - The answers alternate b, a, b, a throughout, so some children may follow the pattern without reading
