Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Plan an email to a pen pal in five parts (greeting, about me, my school, my favourite thing, a question for my pen pal), then write it in an email frame with sentence starters from Dear ___, to From, ___.
One piece of writing, 20 points (no marking criteria on the sheet) - Five planning boxes: Greeting (Dear ___,), About me (I am ___, I like ___), My school, My favourite thing, and Question for my pen pal (What do you like?) - A My Friendly Email frame with starters: Hello! My name is ___. I am ___. / I like ___. My school is ___. / My favourite ___ is ___. - No word bank - A separate model answer: Nida writes to Sam, e.g. My favourite animal is a dolphin.
Use after the guided email sheet, once the email layout is familiar. Allow about 20-25 minutes. - There is no word bank, so brainstorm on the board first (school names, hobbies, animals, food), and explain that children choose the topic in My favourite ___ themselves - Once written, pair children as pen pals: they swap emails and answer each other's What do you like? in a short reply
- In I am ___ children may repeat their name, already given in the previous sentence, rather than age or a quality such as ten years old (the model's planning box also writes I am Nida.) - Answering What do you like? themselves, e.g. I like swimming., instead of asking the pen pal; the model answer does this too - In My favourite ___ is ___ writing only the thing and missing the category: My favourite is a dolphin - Adding an extra full stop where the frame already prints one
