What children will practise

Read a short sentence starting with He, She, It, They, We or I and circle the picture that fits the pronoun, telling apart a boy, a girl, an animal or thing, and a group.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Read the sentence and circle one of three pictures, e.g. He is happy., It is a cat., They are friends., It is a robot. - He twice (items 1, 7), She twice (2, 8), It twice (3, 10), They twice (4, 9), We once and I once - The other pictures are a boy, a girl, a cat or a group, so children must notice gender and number - A separate answer key ticks the right picture

How to use it in class

Use as the first P1-3 pronoun sheet, after pointing at yourself and the class while saying I, he, she, we and they. Allow about 10 minutes. - Read all ten sentences aloud together first, as some young children are not yet reading independently - After marking, play a pointing game: call out He! or They! and children point to the right classmates, then move on to the fill-in sheet

Common sticking points

- In item 6, I am ready., children may hesitate because the single boy could also be he; they need to see I as the speaker - In item 8, She is kind., the answer picture shows two girls, so children may reject it as they - We (item 5) and They use similar group pictures, so the difference may not be clear - In items 3 and 10 some children call the cat he or she and are unsure about it
