Before you begin
Understand place value for 0-100 with tens rods and unit cubes, split numbers into tens and ones, see that the same digit is worth different amounts in different places, and use this to compare, order and build numbers.
20 slides, each a fill-in or drawing task - Slides 1-5, tens and ones: ring 20 cubes into tens, read 4 tens rods and 7 cubes, draw 32 and 50, match the cards for 24 and 42 (number words, 20 + 4, rod pictures), and 10 tens = 100 ones = 1 hundred - Slides 6-10, value by place: the 6 in 64 and 46, swap cards 2 and 5 to make 25 and 52, zero matters with 7 and 70, complete the picture for 53, and split 38, 70 and 95 into tens + ones - Slides 11-15, comparing and ordering: 41 and 59, 68 and 63, 70 and 70; order 18, 81, 45, 54; number lines 28-32 and 68-72; find the two swapped cards in 21 34 56 43 68; write three numbers between 40 and 50 - Slides 16-20, challenges: use 3, 5 and 8 to make the largest and smallest numbers, choose the number with 4 tens and more than 5 ones (42, 46, 58, 64), a mystery number from two clues, every two-digit number from 0, 2 and 6, and write a riddle for a partner - There are no answer slides
Use in a Year 1 numbers-to-100 unit over three or four lessons of about 25-30 minutes, five slides at a time. - For slides 1-10 give children real tens rods and unit cubes to build each number before writing, especially slides 6-8 where they must see that the 6 in 64 means 6 tens - Do slides 16-20 in pairs, then follow up with the comparing numbers 0-100 worksheet or the ordering numbers 0-100 worksheet
- Saying the 6 in 64 is worth 6, just like in 46, without checking its place (slide 6) - Treating 7 and 70 as the same number with a zero tacked on (slide 8) - Ordering 18, 81, 45, 54 by the ones digit first, or treating 18 and 81 as close because they share digits - Using 0 as the tens digit, writing 02 or 06 as two-digit numbers (slide 19 rules this out)
