Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match ten town buildings to words A-J in the word bank, reading the clues on each building such as a red cross, an envelope sign, a book emblem or the vehicle parked outside.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Section A, Picture & Word Match) - Children write a letter in the box beside each building - Word bank: hospital, park, library, post office, school, supermarket, bank, police station, restaurant, fire station - Buildings that need a close look: item 2 school (bell), item 4 bank (coin) and item 7 library (book), which all have similar columned fronts - A separate answer key is included (1-I, 2-E, 3-A, 4-G, 5-B, 6-H, 7-C, 8-F, 9-J, 10-D)

How to use it in class

Use to open the P4-6 places in town unit. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children name the symbol on each building (cross, envelope, bell, coin, flame) so they hunt for clues before reading the words - After marking, play Where am I?: a child says what they are doing, e.g. I buy stamps., and a partner answers You are at the post office.; then move on to the spelling sheet

Common sticking points

- Items 2, 4 and 7 share a columned, classical front, so school, bank and library get swapped unless the bell, coin and book are noticed - Item 1, the restaurant with a striped awning and outdoor tables, may be swapped with the supermarket in item 8 - The word bank has exactly ten words for ten pictures, so one wrong letter always causes a second
