Fill in the one missing vowel in ten place names, such as a_rport, ph_rmacy and m_seum, by circling one of three vowels, using the building picture as a clue.
10 questions, 20 points (Section A, Complete the spelling) - Words: airport, bakery, cafe, bus station, hotel, cinema, market, pharmacy, museum, playground - Each word is missing one vowel, chosen from three, e.g. c_nema (i / a / e) and m_seum (a / e / u) - a is the answer five times (bakery, cafe, market, pharmacy, playground), i twice, u twice and o once - A separate answer key rings the right vowel with a tick
Use once children can say these place names. Allow about 10 minutes. - The words differ from the matching sheet (airport, bakery, cinema and museum are new), so introduce them with pictures first - After marking, have children cover the options and spell the whole word aloud, especially pharmacy, which sounds like f but is written ph
- In item 6, c_nema, children may choose e because the first syllable can sound like 'se' - In item 9, m_seum, choosing e from the 'mew-zee-um' sound - In item 1, a_rport, choosing a, thinking the vowel doubles - In item 8 the pharmacy's green cross may make children think hospital before reading the word
