Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read a short school situation and choose the polite phrase from cards A-J, including ones not on the dialogue sheet such as Excuse me., No, thank you., Can I help you? and That's okay.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Ten illustrated phrase cards A-J: You're welcome., Thank you., Here you are., I am sorry., Yes, please., No, thank you., Please sit down., Can I help you?, That's okay. and Excuse me. - Ten situations, e.g. You bump into someone in the hallway., You want to get past someone in a line., Someone says sorry after a small mistake. - Each card is used exactly once - A Let's Reflect box, and a separate answer key (B, D, A, C, F, J, H, I, G, E)

How to use it in class

Use after the dialogue sheet, once Thank you and You're welcome are familiar. Allow about 15 minutes. - Four phrases here are new (Excuse me., No, thank you., Can I help you?, That's okay.), so teach them with gestures first - After marking, read situations at random and have children hold up or say the reply, then let pairs act out items 2 and 8 together (bump, apologise, That's okay.)

Common sticking points

- Swapping I am sorry. and Excuse me. between item 2 (bumping into someone) and item 6 (getting past in a line) - In item 8, when someone apologises to you, answering I am sorry. back instead of That's okay. - In item 3, when the teacher thanks you, saying Thank you. again instead of You're welcome. - In item 9 the key gives Please sit down., which is what the teacher says, not the child's reply, so many children will pick Thank you.
